Electrolytes are minerals in your blood and other body fluids that carry an electric charge. The main ones, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, phosphate and bicarbonate, regulate your fluid balance, muscle contractions, nerve signals and heart rhythm. You get them from food and drink, lose them through sweat and urine, and need them in balance for your body to function normally.

What are electrolytes?

Electrolytes are substances that develop a positive or negative electrical charge when dissolved in water or body fluid. Because roughly 60% of the adult body is water, electrolytes are present in nearly every cell, tissue and fluid you have: blood, sweat, urine and the fluid inside and around your cells.

Chloride

Chloride works with sodium to maintain fluid balance and blood pressure, and plays a role in digestion (it's a component of stomach acid).

Phosphate and bicarbonate

Phosphate supports bone health and energy metabolism; bicarbonate helps regulate blood pH. Imbalances in either are usually linked to kidney function or breathing disorders.

Why do I need electrolytes?

Every day you lose electrolytes through sweat, urine and other bodily processes. A normal, varied diet replaces most of what you lose. You typically need to actively replenish electrolytes, through food, oral rehydration solutions, or electrolyte drinks, when you lose more than usual, for example during:

  • Intense or prolonged exercise, especially in heat
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Excessive sweating from illness or fever
  • Certain medications, such as diuretics

Symptoms vary depending on which electrolyte is affected and whether levels are too high or too low, but common signs include:
